Scandal Returns!

Thursday nights just aren't the same without Scandal. All of us Scandalholics can finally stop holding our breath and exhale. Our favorite drama returns this Thursday February 27th at 10:00 PM on ABC. But everyone doesn't feel the same way we do. There are many critics who won't support the hit TV show because they say it romanticizes adultery. So what would make this happily married woman who used to help countless brides and grooms on the most romantic day of their lives root for the mistress? I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's the writing. Shonda Rhimes is the award winning producer and writer of the show. She is also well known for producing and writing the scripts for Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice, also on ABC.

Kerri Washington who plays Olivia Pope isn't just the mistress of the president of the United States. She owns a crisis management firm. Which means she and her staff spend time solving the problems of her troubled clients. Tony Goldwyn plays the POTUS Fitzgerald Grant III. A lot of the show's storyline takes place behind the cutthroat walls of the White House. So you see, this political drama isn't only about adultery. It's a thrill ride full of head jerking plot twists and turns. You can watch full episodes at abc.com and judge for yourself.

The 2014 NAACP Image Awards Red Carpet

The 45th annual NAACP Image Awards aired on TV One last night live from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Here are a few of my favorite gowns. Lupita Nyong'o from 12 Years A Slave wore a caramel colored pleated leather plunging V-neck gown by Givenchy.

The Game's Wendy Raquel Robinson wore a bold blue sweetheart strapless gown accented by feathers on the bottom.

My favorite of the evening was a daring black Michael Costello gown. It was cut out across her chest with a flowing train from the Southland actress's shoulder down to the red carpet.

Repentance

I have been seeing an intriguing trailer for a new movie called Repentance. The psychological thriller comes to theaters in limited release Friday February 28th. It stars big name stars Forest Whitaker, Anthony Mackie, Sanaa Lathan, Mike Epps, and Nicole Ari Parker.

Mackie plays a self-help author turned life coach. He begins counseling an unstable man trying to get over the death of his mother. There is a plot twists when the client abducts his counselor and his family. Writer Shintaro Shimosawa based Repentance on the film Gypsy and the Guru.

I can't wait to see this movie. Hopefully the limited release includes Atlanta.

NY Fashion Week Day 7 & 8 Recap

Mercedes Benz fashion week is finally a wrap. I love technology. With the live streaming, you could enjoy seeing the shows without having to venture out into the cold New York streets.

Lots of people were looking forward to the Michael Kors show. I was one of them. The collection was full of charcoal and black classic ready to wear pieces.

The designs that stood out to me were the shag belted sweater, the fringe skirt, and the off the shoulder sheer dress. There was definitely something in this collection for everyone.

Zang Toi's show was full of emerald green. I love the way it popped against the black that it was paired with. I liked a lot about this collection. If I had to choose just one, my favorite piece was the green faux fur belted dress.

NY Fashion Week Day 5& 6 Recap

Monday and Tuesday were day five and six of Mercedes Benz fashion week. Dennis Basso's show was great. It was all about beautiful fur.

There was white fur, black fur, gray fur, green fur, electric blue fur, purple fur, and burgundy fur. It was so pretty that it would make a person that didn't love fur change their mind.

Underneath all of the fur were lots of sparkle. Whether it was sequins, shiny fabric, or streaks of gold, it was all gorgeous.

Milly by Michelle Smith also had lots of great touches of fur. She had ready-to-wear pieces with a twist. Like fur sweaters and fringe pink see through skirts.

My favorite parts of the collection were the gold sequin skirt and pants. I also loved the black layered ruffled dress, quilted sweater, and black fringe jumpsuit.

The students from the world famous Art Institute in New York put on a fabulous fashion show to close out day six. I'm not a big fan of yellow, but I loved the pops of yellow throughout the show.

It was great to see the different visions by the students manifest in various fabrics, styles, and colors. I really liked the hooded fuchsia coat over the blue outfit.

The common thread was that all of the models wore long beautiful wavy and frizzy hair. At the end of the show, the student designers walked the runway with their lovely models in their final looks.

All About Last Night Open on Valentine's Day

Comedian Kevin Hart, Regina Hall, the very handsome Michael Ealy, and Joy Bryant star in About Last Night. The movie opens nationwide in theaters today. It premiered a few days ago at the Pan African Film Festival as the centerpiece film. Hart, Ealy, and Hall all worked together in the comedy Think Like a Man and the upcoming Think Like a Man 2. Funny man Kevin Hart is on fire right now. I'm sure that every involved hopes that this movie will be a #1 box office hit like Ride Along which is also in theaters now.

The younger generation may think that this is an original movie. Actually it is a remake of the 1986 box office hit by the same name. It starred Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, James Belushi, and Elizabeth Perkins. Film critic Robert Ebert praised the movie when it came out. Both movies are based off the 1974 play Sexual Perversity written by David Mamet.

I've seen the previews for this romantic comedy and I can't wait to see it. Go out and support this movie, come back to my blog, and post a comment about it.

Creative Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

Warning: If you do not like chocolate this post is not for you! Yes, you can go to the drugstore and buy your sweetie a five dollar Valentine's Day card and box of assorted chocolates that have been on the shelf for who knows how long. That wouldn't be as fun as make it yourself though. It's easy to do. Just melt some chocolate, dip, and dip again in crushed nuts.

Did you know that Godiva makes chocolate flavored infused vodka? Mix 1 part vodka and four parts cranberry juice or use your own favorite vodka recipe.

Now don't kill me. I haven't tried this yet, but I plan to. I love chocolate. And I love bacon. So the two together should be great. I've heard this treat is delicious. If you've tried it, let me know. Enjoy.

NY Fashion Week Day 3 & 4 Recap

Saturday and Sunday were day 3 & 4 of Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week. Here is my list of the best collections. The Herve Leger by Max Azria show was full of lots of sexy cut outs to expose the right amount of skin. It had shiny beading around necklines and along the curves of the model's bodies.

I loved the way the touches of fringe swayed as they walked. The designer also used piping as one of the key eye catching elements of the line. It was a great collection.

I was looking forward to seeing Monique Lhuillier's show. She did not disappoint. Her collection went from ready-to-wear belted dresses and suits, all the way to gorgeous evening gowns.

There was a wonderful mix of fabrics in this line. I loved the sheer fabric and the layered netting pieces. The hot pink dresses were some of my favorites.

The long flowing evening gowns stole the show. I adored the dresses that were very short in the front and long in the back. As well as the details of the hot pink design on the black and the black applique on top of the white dress.

South African designer David Tlale's collection started out tame with the beautiful pale lavender blouses with gold collars, but quickly kicked it up a notch when the electric blue leather stepped on the runway.

Of course there were a lot of little black dresses in his fall collection. But they were gorgeous with the perfect pairing of sheer fabric and flowered details.

My favorite gown was a champagne colored floor length gown with creative sleeves and brown sparkling beads on the collar and waistline.

Mongolian designer Katya Zol's fashion show began with performing artists who amazed the crowd with their skills. The show got even better when the models walked out.

The colors ranged from neutral browns, grays, tans, and blacks. I usually don't like white for fall and winter, but I loved the way Katya did her winter white.

Even with all of the wool, cashmere, leather, and fur, the collection wasn't heavy. The designer's line had dramatic high splits up the front, low cut backs, hooded jackets, and two-tone leather to keep it light.

I knew when I saw the first green looks, that I was going to like Vivienne Tam's show. It was a great mix of prints and solids.

Although the collection had black pieces in it, unlike a lot of other collections, black was used sparingly. That left room for all of the other great jewel tone colors that she used.

Everyone loved the shades of greens, blues, charcoals, purples, and reds. The drawstring bows around the necklines and waists regardless of the fabric that she used was also a nice touch. I loved being able to watch all of the shows streaming live.

Forgive Me

Today is the book release day for Forgive Me by author Stacy Campbell. I had the pleasure of having lunch with Stacy last summer at the National Book Club Conference here in Atlanta. She's a very sweet lady. I was delighted to spend a little time getting to know her.

Around this same time last year she released her debut novel Dream Girl Awakened. I've read the rave reviews about the book. I'm enjoying getting to know the characters right now, so that I can pick up a copy of the sequel Forgive Me. Yes, I know I'm a little late to the party. I blame it on the fact that there aren't enough hours in the day.

Stacy was born in Sparta, Georgia. Her books are published under Zane's Strebor Books.  She is currently working on her next novel. Congratulations Stacy!

NY Fashion Week Day 1 & 2 Recap

Day one of Mercedes-Benz fashion week began with lots of great designers. Desigual was one of the two shows that I enjoyed watching from the live stream the most. There were no solids in this collection. It was full of black, white, and a lot of color polka dot and graphics.

I especially loved the printed dresses and skirts with emerald green and red in them. The pieces at the end of the collection with gold added some sparkle to the line. All of the models were dancing to the beat of the music and having a great time. The common thread that pulled their looks together were their curly bouncy hair and the gold eye shadow that they all wore.

I look forward to seeing the Go Red For Women Red Dress Collection ever year. This show is different from the rest of the shows during the week because the models are celebrities giving their time for a good cause. Since they aren't professional models, their own personalities come through on the runway. The very pregnant Daphne Oz waddled down the runway. Lindsey Vonn  even walked the runway on crutches.

All of the ladies wore red dresses donated to the organization so that the proceeds could go to the organization to fight heart disease in women. Designers like Dolce & Gabbana, Oscar de la Renta, Nicole Miller, Zac Posen, and many more created gorgeous evening gowns for the show. The 5' 2" Kat Graham had the best runway walk. Anika Noni Rose entertained the crowd with her turns and twirls. Anna Sophia Robb wore the best dress, in my opinion designed by Alice & Olivia.

Day two had many great shows by Rebecca Minkoff, Nicole Miller, Academy of Art University students, and Emerson. The highlight of the day for me was the collection by Carmen Marc Valvo. His mostly black line sparkled. It also had the right amount of color, touches of the popular faux leather, and fur.

The gorgeous models looked great in all of the gowns as they strutted. The common threads were their serious expressions with bangs and tight ponytails with multiple rubber bands.

Valentine's Day Movie Picks

I know that everyone may not like going to crowded restaurants to celebrate Valentine’s Day. If you prefer to stay in the comfort of your own home, here are a few movies that would be great to watch. First up, we have the hilarious romantic comedy Think Like a Man. I I know that everyone won’t agree but I love movies based on books. Steve Harvey’s penned Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man which the movie is based on. Funny man Kevin Hart stars in and narrates the movie. It also stars “the dreamer” Michael Ealy and “the woman who is her own man” Taraji P. Henson. Jerry Ferrara plays “the non-committer” who lives with Gabrielle Union “the girl who wants the ring”. Meagan Good stars as “the 90 day rule girl” coupled up with Romany Malco “the player”. Lastly, there is “the single mom” Regina Hall and “the mama’s boy” Terrence J. Not only is the cast great, but the soundtrack is too. It has original hits like Tonight song by John Legend and Think Like a Man by Jennifer Hudson.

The Notebook is another romantic movie based on a book by Nicholas Sparks. It is narrated by James Garner who plays an elderly man in a nursing home. The story switches back and forth from the present day to when the couple met in the 1940's. It stars Rachel McAdams who play Allie, a rich girl and Ryan Gosling plays Noah, a poor boy who she falls in love with. Her parents don't want their daughter to be with trash like him. She moves on getting engaged to someone her family approves of and Noah goes off to war.  When he returns, he begins renovating a dream house for them to live in. Allie comes back and breaks it off with her fiance to return to Noah. The audience figures out that the elderly man telling the story is Noah explaining to his wife, who suffers from dementia how they met.

Love & Basketball is the story of the girl and boy next door creatively depicted in four quarters of their lives. Monica and Quincy grow up as neighbors who share a strong love for basketball and eventually each other. They let the stress of family disappointments and making time for each other tear them apart. But Monica, played by Sanaa Lathan never stops loving Quincy played by Omar Epps. Love & Basketball was written by Gina Prince-Bythwood and produced by Spike Lee. Sanaa won a BET Award and an NAACP Image Award for her role back in 2001.

The last movie on the list is 50 First Dates starring funny man Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Sandler plays a player afraid of commitment. Her falls in love with Barrymore who suffers from a condition of amnesia with short term memory loss. Filmed in romantic Hawaii, everyday Sandler sets out to entertain and woo Barrymore because she doesn't remember who he is. The next day she starts out with a blank state and he begins the process again. 50 First Dates is a Happy Madison Production.
