Diane Von Furstenberg Fall 2014

I picked a few of my favorites from Diane Von Furstenberg's fall fashion show. Seperately they look different, but she transitioned several patterns and colors to blend together. I loved the mix of sparkling lace and leather together.

There was plenty of colored fur in the collection. The electric blue ones peaked my interest. My favorite pieces were the detailed mismatched patterns that looked great paired together.

Frankie and Alice

Imagine yourself waking up as a racist white woman in the body of an African American. How about coming out of a blackout and not knowing where you are or how you got there.

I can't wait until April 4th. That is the release date for Frankie and Alice. The movie was in limited release back in 2010 and screened at the Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews. It is the story of a stripper in the 1970's who keeps having blackouts and finding herself in troubling situations. The character finally gets help from a psychiatrist, played by Stellan Skarsgard, and discovers that she has multiple personalities.

This dramatic film was written by Cheryl Edwards. Halle Berry is the producer and star of the film. The movie is inspired by a true story. Berry recently won the Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture NAACP Image Award for her role as Frankie. Who is going to see it?

PADV Spring Style Event

I was delighted to attend the Partnership Against Domestic Violence spring style event Thursday evening. The show took place at Bloomingdale's Lenox Mall.

Guest enjoyed food and dessert catered by Chef Elliott Farmer of Farmer's Gourmet Catering. He was available after the show to sign his book.

The models walking the runway were volunteers, employees, or people dedicated to preventing domestic violence. Did you know that one out of four women experience domestic violence in their lifetime?

The designer clothes they wore were provided by Bloomingdale's. Ten percent of purchased proceeds after the event benefited PADV. The event was a great kick off the 26th Annual Hearts of Hope Gala on May 10th at the Ritz Carlton.

Nicole Miller Fall 2014

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York had so many great designers. One that I wanted to talk about was Nicole Miller. I loved her faux fur skirts. The collection was full of neutral colored prints with splashes of color.

There were plenty of sleek black leather pants and accessories. My favorite piece in her show was the unexpected peacock dress. I loved the way the feathers moved down the runway.

The Single Moms Club

The Single Moms Club is a comedy-drama written and directed by the very talented Tyler Perry. It began filming in late 2012 in Atlanta by Lion Gate and Tyler Perry Studios. It is the story of five very different woman brought together because their rebellious kids vandalize their school. As punishment, they are put in charge a fundraiser.

Since they are all single, the ladies decide to form a support group. They begin to learn that they actually have a lot in common with each other. The fun continues when one woman babysits all of the kids while the rest of the ladies go out and when the men in their lives get involved in the fundraiser.

Recently, it was announced that the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) has picked up The Single Moms Club as a dramatic show based upon the movie. The movie comes out Friday March 14th. The series is slated to come out later this year. I can't wait.

Love in a Carry-On Bag

Back in August, I attended the National Book Club Conference for the first time. Getting to meet a lot of authors that I've read and admired for a long time was a wonderful experience. I also got to meet new authors that I have come to love such as Sadeqa Johnson. I just finished reading her debut novel Love in a Carry-On.

It's a story about a couple struggling to keep their steamy long distance relationship alive. Just when Erica thinks that she can stop spending her Friday evenings traveling from New York to D.C. to see her musician boyfriend Warren every weekend, he gets a year extension on his contract. He really loves Erica, but a man has to make a living doesn't he? Even if he has a short skirt wearing co-worker sabotaging ever move he makes. But Erica has her own issues at work trying to climb up the ladder to success to tend to.

In the midst of all the traveling, long distance calling, and working there are issues with their parents. Erica's needy mother comes up with every excuse in the book to borrow money from her. This is causing an enormous sense of resentment from Erica because she knows what her mother really uses the money for. That's what drove her father away when she was young and she hasn't spoken with him since. Warren probably wishes that his overbearing father would stop speaking to him. Instead he keeps dropping bombshell after bombshell causing Warren to wonder if everything his parents told him when he was growing up was a lie.
Love in a Carry-On Bag was a great read. Hopefully Sadeqa's next novel Second House from the Corner comes out soon.

The Game

I love The Game. Not to be confused with the rapper The Game or the film The Game starring the always handsome Michael Douglas. No, I mean the comedy-drama TV show The Game that airs on BET. Tonight marks the 7th season premier of the hit show. It is another of the long list of shows that is filmed here in Atlanta. It hasn't always been filmed here though. The show originally aired on The CW back in 2006 in Los Angeles. That was before it broke many fans hearts when it was cancelled after three wonderful seasons. Thankfully, fans spoke up and BET brought back the hit show created by Mara Brock Akil in January 2011.

The show is about the San Diego Sabers football team players. It covers the ups and downs of being famous professional athletes along with their sometimes dysfunctional families. A lot of the players are cocky and egotistical which makes the show unbelievably funny. The women in their lives are all but required to be active members of the Sunbeams to support their men and do charity work in the community. But keeping a room full of woman of different mindsets under control can be a grueling task. Ask any of the former Sunbeam presidents.

Don't be fooled. There is still a lot of humor in the show. But like any great script there is plenty of lying, cheating, deception, addiction, pregnancies, weddings, and celebrity appearances. Spoiler alerts let us know that one of the former lead characters is coming back this year. Check out BET to watch episodes and make sure you tune in tonight.

2014 Academy Awards Red Carpet Fashion

Before host Ellen Degeneres begins roasting the audience of celebrities at the 86th annual Academy Awards. There is the part of the night that I love, the red carpet. Viola Davis looked beautiful in her emerald green Escada gown on the arm of her husband.

Kerry Washington looked glowing in her strapless custom Jason Wu purple gown. I loved the long split in the front and the diamond accent.

Another great looking couple tonight was John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen. Designer Monique Lhuillier created this gorgeous black and floral gown with a train for her.

My favorite dress of the night was worn by actress Charlize Theron. There are so many details to this Christian Dior original. I especially loved the plunging bodice and the sheer pleated train.

Enjoy the rest of the Oscars!
